I have been on countless fly in fishing trips in my lifetime, and North Caribou Camps is something special. It stands alone as the very best fly-in fishing experience I’ve had within the province of Ontario! Everything from the quality of the accommodations, the great boats and motors and the incredible trophy fishing, they’re all as good as it gets!

EasyTravel

North Caribou is remote, lying roughly 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Normally getting there would entail a long drive to get to the jump off point, but not this camp! Anglers fishing North Caribou fly directly out of Thunder Bay. A night at the Valhalla Inn before the flying into camp is included as part of the package. Early the next morning guests are taken to the Wasaya Airlines hangar for their charter flight to the native community of Weagamow Lake. From there guests and their luggage are transported by float plane into camp - a short 15 minute hop. It’s stress free, efficient, and it gets you in and out of camp quickly!

QualityAccommodations

The camp is situated on Cemetery Island in the geographic centre of the lake, the site of an old Hudson’s Bay post. The set up at North Caribou Camps is unique. The main camp is perfect for larger groups with 3 sleep cabins accommodating up to 15 guests. Along with that is a large comfortable fully equipped kitchen cabin/lounge with the bonus of satellite wifi so you can stay in touch with the outside world. A double sided three piece bathroom complete with flush toilets and showers is set behind the kitchen cabin servicing the entire camp. A little further down the beach from the main camp is a very private self contained 6 man cabin set up for smaller groups with all of the same amenities as the main camp. North Caribou also provides an extensive list of non perishable foods along with drinking water as part of the package. This makes shopping for your trip a breeze!

FantasticBoats

When you’re spending long days on the water you want to be comfortable, and North Caribou understands that! There is a fleet of 16’ Lund boats on site complete with full floors, live-wells, padded swivel seats, electronics, casting decks, and rod lockers. They’re powered by fast and light 25hp electric start Evinrude E-Tec motors. For a camp boat this is as good as it gets!

ExpansiveWaters

There’s just no way to sugar coat it, North Caribou is BIG! At more than 40 kilometres long and up to 28 kilometres wide, there’s over 81,000 acres of water to explore and fish. It’s a sprawling body of water! Three major rivers feed the lake, the Thurston, the Donnelly and the Nango, each one providing anglers with more sheltered current areas to fish when the weather gets rough. It’s a lake studded with countless islands and because of its immense size navigation can be difficult at times. A hand held GPS with a topo map chip installed is strongly recommended!

UnbelievableFishing

The big draw at North Caribou is without a doubt the fishing! It’s easily one of the very best trophy pike lakes in the province with numbers of 40 inch plus fish a real possibility during any month of the open water season. Anglers who focus on pike can expect some incredible catches! Walleye are unbelievably abundant. The magic number for most anglers seems to be 100 fish in a day. That’s an everyday occurrence at North Caribou! In fact if one was to REALLY apply themselves 200 a day is possible. That’s not a fish story, that’s the reality of this amazing fishery!
